| We needed a set of platen bolts for
an Old Style Chandle & Price Pilot press we're
restoring. Since these have not been manufactured in at
least 80 years, and the only ones we found were for the
larger presses and cost $100 each, anyway, we realized
that we needed to have some made. Our friend Rob found
us a machinist willing to make them using his CAD
system. He made the four shown below (less, 2 long, 2
short), and has the digital design is stored in his
system so that making more will require less work the
future. Update: 9/20/17. We recently discovered that some Early Series C&P Pilots used a finer thread bolt than the 14 tpi bolts shown here. A friend is restoring a Pilot which has bolts with 16 teeth per inch (16 tpi), so if you are in need of platen bolts for an Early Series C&P Pilot, check the threads per inch before purchasing any - from us or anywhere else. We also had one New Style Pilot bolt made a few years ago. We bartered a day of training on a Kelsey 6x10 for one bolt. It was a fair swap in my mind... Series Pilot Platen Bolt
Note that these bolts are for the Old Style Pilot. Platen bolts on the New Series are certainly quite different. see below:  New Series Pilot Platen Bolt
The bolt twists into the platen and platen pressure is adjusted using the left-handed thread driven by the hex shape on the bolt itself. The right side extends through the rocker and once adjusted for impression, the platen is locked in place by the nut on the right. The Craftsmen Superior, an otherwise pretty much direct copy of the Pilot, uses a different - and far simpler - platen bolt system entirely. A friend also had need for a set of gripper arms /
frisket fingers for a Golding jobber. The same machinist
agreed to make them as well, and boy, did he do a great
job... So, if you need some platen bolts for your Pilot or gripper arms for your Golding, contact us and we'll do our best to help you. Feed Table Brackets - We don't have them here, but Steve Robinson at Letterpreservation has recently offered newly cast feed table brackets for the Old Style Pilot Press. These are currently being sold at their eBay Store for $199/pair (2/27/2012).  Yoke Spring -
C&P Part Number 206E - Inside of the
press as viewed from the back corner, the Yoke Spring can
be seen. This spring is  3/4 - 7/8" in diameter
and 4" long. Its purpose is to dampen the motion of the
yoke as it returns to the down position, elminating an
annoying "bang" as the press rerturns to the feed
position. This spring is sold by Fastenal as their #36 Compression Spring. We stock them for $9.00 each + S&H. Note the old spring in the photo - it is broken into 7 pieces, but continued to function as it did when it was new - over 100 years ago.. click on either image to see
