Manufactured in Meriden, CT

The OLD Kelsey Excelsior

These two presses came from the collection of Glenn Babecki, who had used them for many years, but realized that it was time to pass them on... The first thing we did was to take some photos comparing some interesting differences between the press made in 1939 and the press made in 1952.
Glenn Babecki with his presses
The 1939 Model O is the first press made after a major design change between the newer style (Models O,P,R,U, etc.) and earlier versions of the same sized press. Many parts on these presses are interchangeable, while others are NOT. Note Kelseys warning about ordering replacement parts.

1939 - Model O Gooseneck (round)
1952-P Kelsey Excelsior Side View
1952 - Model P Gooseneck (angular)
1939 & 1952 Kelsey Excelsior Back Views Note the back views to the left:
The roller carriages are different, although both strike upwards. The Model N (not shown) and earlier models strike downwards and use a different striker

Note also the difference in the shapes of the roller catriages and the ink disk striker mounting rods

The 1939 rod is cast into the piece, the newer 1952 rod one is round steel, pressed into the carriage.
Note the date stamp on this press' chase bed.

B 39 B

indicates that this was a model "B" press manufactured in February of 1939 - No matter that the chassis stamp says this press is a Model O.

We cannot explain the discrepancy - yet.

This date stamp is normally found at the top center of the bed. This one - possibly one of the first - is stamped in the top LEFT corner.. later stamps are centered at the top of the chase bed.
